Sure, I like variety as much as the next guy. But every now and then I find a combination that just works for a specific situation… and then I repeat it over and over again. For example, for a lazy Friday night it’s Thai takeaway + Malbec + Bachelor. For Sunday mornings it’s a gigantic Americano + Eggs Royale + digging myself out of a shame spiral. (Just kidding… sometimes.)
But for beach holiday style it’s flowy skirts + crop tops + flat sandals.
Okay, so let’s break it down. First off, I tend to tighten it up in the fitness department in the weeks before a big holiday – so, riding on the coattails of newfound body confidence, crop tops sneak their way into the case. But while on the holiday I like to eat as much possible – so a high-waisted, flowy skirt helps hide a food baby. Plus, the loose silhouette is nice and breezy for extreme heat. Typically these skirts are midi because I’m tall and just happen to be obsessed with midi skirts at the moment. But length is not a requirement for this highly mathematical equation.
And then flat sandals… well, they’re pretty much a given anywhere even remotely warm or beachy. (Groundbreaking journalism here, I know.)
Here are some of my fave examples…
So I’m actually pretty proud of this craftiness that I pulled out of the bag for a recent trip to Italy. I took my favourite Liberty scarf and a silk scarf I had bought in Florence five years earlier and tied them together to make a midi skirt. I paired it with this uber cheap New Look crop top (love the ’90s neckline) and these suede New Look sandals.
This pleated blush skirt was actually a maxi that I picked up from Mango last year. But, with my midi obsession in full-swing, I had it hacked off just below the knee. I pair it with a striped cami from Topshop that I knotted at the waist to create a DIY crop. Oh, and I slid my sandy, burnt feet into some bright pink leather flip flops.
I actually love this straw-like midi from H&M – and it’s thick enough that it works for the office as well as the beach. I paired it with a neon-pink scallop-hem crop from Topshop and snake-print sandals from Target.
Another DIY moment here (more on that later). I folded down the top of this halterneck ASOS dress to make it into a midi skirt. I paired it with a striped tee from Zara, those trusty suede sandals and tied that same Liberty scarf around my neck to make me feel fancy.
This lilac, zip-up top is one of my faves because of the fun neckline. During a balmy night in the Maldives, I wore it with a breezy leopard-print skirt from Oasis. Though I’m barefoot here, I believe there were probably some flat sandals at some point during the evening… but in this particular moment I seem to have replaced them with a vodka soda and a sweaty face because it was seriously hot AF.
