The 10 Pound Race… Again

Well, we’ve decided to do it again. Last year MR and I engaged in a friendly little weight-loss competition ahead of our holiday in Thailand. We raced to see who could lose 10 pounds the quickest and found great success. Sure, it took us an embarrassing 103 days to do it because we basically kept losing the last two pounds every week and then gaining them back every single weekend (thanks to booze, carbs and fun). But we did it, and that’s what matters. What does not matter is who won. (Me.)

Let’s just start things off by saying: Yahoo! For weeks I was kind of just going up and down , losing a bit of weight on the weekdays and then gaining it back on the weekends. And then this week the numbers started to drop. I’m now just one teeny tiny pound away from winning The 10 Pound Race. (Maybe if I can do it in less than 80 days I can be slightly less embarrassed about how stupidly long it’s taken.)

Well, I don’t want to brag or anything but I’m pretty much killing this whole #10PoundRace situation. Avid dieters and general healthy types (yes, I’m looking at you, skinny carb-hating coworker) might argue that losing 4 lbs in 23 days is really not that difficult or noteworthy. And yes, I’m aware that many people do juice cleanses or whatever and lose that in one week. But I’m quite proud that I’m continuing to go in the right direction and making somewhat steady progress. Also, I’m still having 2 days a week of booze-filled fun a week, and I like to think that adds to the accomplishment.

Now this is more like it! In the past week I’ve lost 3 pounds and I’m starting to get into my healthy groove. I went to spinning on Monday morning (yes, I finally forced myself to get out of of bed for a 7am class!), and it really set me on the right track for the rest of the week.

Well… things have taken a turn for the worse.

After my confidence-boosting weigh-in on Wednesday morning, I proceeded to drink and eat my face off for the rest of the week. My client lunch on Wednesday featured that heady combination of food and booze that is both abundant and free. I noshed on absolutely delicious sushi from Chotto Matte and consumed more than a bottle’s worth (yes, just for me) of Sauvignon Blanc – and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the week.

I’m actually feeling pretty awesome today. I weighed myself this morning and I’m down two pounds from Saturday. TWO POUNDS! I definitely haven’t been perfect, but I’ve made a concerted effort to step up my game.

We decided to start The 10 Pound Race on November 1. Some people might say it wasn’t wise to start a new fitness routine the day after hosting a Halloween party, when the possibility of crippling hangovers was at its highest. But somehow I managed to wake up before 11am (shocking) and make it to the gym in time for spinning class. (I did waste about 10 minutes actually searching for and locating my trainers, which is just sad.)
