Every year when October rolls around I go into coat-scouting overdrive. My desire for chic outerwear is even more intense living in London because the winters are more mild. You can get away with wearing a wool coat – perhaps even partially unbuttoned. Whereas in New York City’s you’re pretty much required to zip yourself into a full-length sleeping bag from November to March.
One of my favourite ways to make an outfit look cool and non-boring is by mixing prints. For me, deciding which prints work together is really just about trial and error – and to get it right, you have to start with the individual pieces.
I admitted last week that I’m having all the feelings about my plaid shirt from Madewell. (Seriously, I can’t stop wearing it. It’s getting weird.) But it turns out my obsession extends to pretty much all things plaid. Or tartan, depending on what country you’re in. I’ve discovered that it’s an especially fun print to pair with leather and sequins. The result is an unexpected mix of classic and cool – and it’s a trio that’s definitely made for a day-to-night transition.
You know how sometimes you buy a new piece and you just love it so much that you actually have to stop yourself from wearing it three days in a row? That’s exactly what I’m going through with this Flannel Ex-Boyfriend Shirt in Albion Plaid from Madewell. Seriously, it’s so comfy that I’m tempted to sleep in it at night – and it goes with pretty much everything in my wardrobe.
